Within the galaxy of Star Wars there are a lot of things that a protocol droid can do – like being fluent in over six million forms of communications, for example. There are a lot of things that a protocol droid shouldn’t do as well – like becoming a galactically well-known bounty hunter and thief, per se. Yet, that is exactly what 4-LOM became.
Sideshow is proud to introduce the latest Star Wars sixth scale bounty hunter – 4-LOM. As calculating as an automaton can be, 4-LOM developed a reputation for logically working his way through whatever challenges existed between himself and his target of choice. Sideshow’s take on the Industrial Automaton’s droid-gone-rogue features a detailed portrait, weathered paint application, two pairs of hands for alternate display, and 4-LOM’s weapon of choice – the BlasTech DLT-19 Heavy Blaster Rifle.
When It comes to one0sixth scale figures, if the licensee has made C-3PO, it’s likely that 4-LOM is right around the corner. This transpired in the Medicom Toys’ Real Action Heroes line, and now history has repeated itself for Sideshow Collectibles’ 1:6 Scale Figures line. 4-LOM is a cool bounty hunter from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. It would be silly to believe that the figure wouldn’t be a hit for those collectors that love one-sixth scale figures. Medicom Toy’s Real Action Heroes C-3PO and 4-LOM figures were pretty excellent and many details about them hold up well even today. But Sideshow Collectibles has been able to take this scale even further with authenticity and realism so we believe that they have the upper hand here in this scale. 4-LOM also brings a very unique feature forward for the very first time. We’ll get into that in a moment or two, but if you could just for the time being see our point that Sideshow Collectibles just isn’t afraid to take things further in the name of superior quality. We weren’t overt-the-top excited to get 4-LOM because we thought that Medicom Toys’ Real Action Heroes 4-LOM was sublime. Now that isn’t the case. Sideshow Collectibles now hold the winning crown.
4-LOM is based on 2016’s C-3PO 1:6 Scale Figure but it also comes with a great deal of newness in addition to an all-new paint job. Sideshow Collectibles has been pretty good at knocking out the bounty hunters from Episode V one by one. But it’s been a while since the first three and it’s great to see them continue this trend. Because of the similarities that exist between 4-LOM and C-3PO, it made sense for Sideshow Collectibles to make this bounty hunter next as they could focus on previously existing sculpts and how to reinvent them into all-new first time characters. 4-LOM is an impressive release and has a wonderful sculpt as we all should have expected it would. The new parts including interchangeable hands, blaster rifle and portrait are all beautifully sculpted and painted. Unlike the C-3PO 1:6 Scale Figure, 4-LOM comes without any finger articulation. While it was a novel form of articulation for our favorite protocol droid, it’s more than fine by us that 4-LOM just comes with standard interchangeable pre-posed hands. It certainly makes it so much easier to pose the figure with accessories (in this case the large blaster rifle) because you don’t have to futz with so many tiny parts.
For us the coolest thing about 4-LOM is the semitransparent/translucent eyes. They have the neatest effects and capture light and nearly glow at the right angle. It’s the first time we’ve ever seen 4-LOM’s eyes approached in this manner. What’s more, you can position this figure with or without direct light to accentuate the glow. Even better, there is so much detail in the texture of 4-LOM’s eyes that is looks like shattered glass. It’s beautiful. The rest of the deco on 4-LOM is equally beautiful as well. Sideshow Collectibles added rust detail at the “seams” of this bounty hunter’s armor plating. And the unmistakable red slash mark on the left breast plate looks as brightly as it does faded. For one reason or another, Sideshow Collectibles has deemed 4-LOM to be there very own online exclusive. These figures won’t be available anywhere else but Sideshow Collectibles (aside from aftermarket sales and select international distributors). It seems to us that this isn’t the best decision for a popular bounty hunter like 4-LOM. We’re sure collectors want to ensure that they get all six of them, so why add the exclusivity to 4-LOM? This is a great figure. We can’t wait to see the rest of the bounty hunters.
