(Jedi Knight Outfit)
1983 may have been the most significant year of my life. Movies were never an option for entertainment in my household. So when my father announced to my brother and I that he would be taking us to see RETURN OF THE JEDI in theaters opening week, we just about had a meltdown, in a good way of course. Doing this for us was a huge step for my father. He worked all the time and his free time was utilized hunting to put meat on the table. We lived a very humble lifestyle and had little means. So spending money on movie tickets, popcorn, and soda while enjoying our favorite pastime was too special for words as far as my brother and I were concerned. RETURN OF THE JEDI, of course, exceeded our expectations and relatively soon after we returned home from the movie theater my brother and I worked up birthday and Christmas wish lists. (We never received toys unless it was a birthday or a significant holiday.) My ninth birthday was in July of that year, but interestingly I didn’t receive any RETURN OF THE JEDI toys as birthday gifts. I wish I could recall why, but I cannot.
Anyhow, fast-forward to December, we had vast lists of toys and only expected a fraction of what we requested. However, my dad worked a ton of overtime, and my mother ensured that my brother and I received every last item we wrote on our Christmas lists. While suffering a terrible case of strep throat (as annual as Christmas was for me as a kid, sadly), I opened one RETURN OF THE JEDI item after another. You name it; I received it. The Ewok Village, Jabba The Hutt playset, all of the new Mini Rigs, and all 17 figures that made up the first wave of figures from the RETURN OF THE JEDI line are just some of what I received that year for Christmas. Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight Outfit) was one of them of course, and I received the one with the green lightsaber. I became immediately enamored with the figure. I believe I placed myself into the action figure and recreated every last scene I could conjure up from the memories of the film months earlier. With a stunning likeness to Mark Hamill and a posture and pose that is ageless in every way, the figure was made better with a perfectly fitted soft-goods cloak, skiff guard blaster and adequately colored lightsaber. To date, although close in some instances, I don’t feel that Hasbro has mastered a Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight Outfit) in the modern line. Yes, they’ve come close, but they should follow in the footsteps of the 1983 figure and see what the results are. I am sure I can speak for many collectors that this is the consummate Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight Outfit) action figure. It doesn’t get better than this.
