Under attack by an Imperial Star Destroyer, protocol droid C-3PO and his partner R2-D2 safely escaped a battered Rebel capital ship and landed on the desert planet of Tatooine. Soon after, the droids were abducted by scavenging Jawas and sold to Owen Lars for use on his desert moisture farm. Luke Skywalker, nephew of Owen and a Tatooine youth, remained unaware that his uncle's purchase of C-3PO and R2-D2 was to help launch one of the most pivotal destinies the galaxy had ever known... his own.
Kenner/Hasbro’s The Power Of The Force “2” [Green/Freeze Frame] Cinema Scenes sets instantly took off, and collectors couldn’t wait to see what themes would be released next. After starting as retailer exclusives (Kenner/Hasbro gave both Walmart and Toys R Us their own unique sets), now they’re a mainline item, and they’re making collectors happy with the amount of newness getting added to them. The Purchase Of The Droids Cinema Scenes set incorporate three main characters that interacted with each other as the Jawa Sandcrawler rolled up the Lars’ homestead. Uncle Owen Lars, a very rusty C-3PO and an obligatory Luke Skywalker make up the trio of figures based on the purchasing of C-3PO and R2-D2. The scene is iconic Star Wars, and although we don’t get any new first-time-made droids, we do get a dioramic-friendly backdrop as part of the packaging which completes this set beautifully. As you know, the packaging converts into a background, and you also get a display base including a sandy terrain just like we saw in A New Hope.
Uncle Owen Lars is an all-new figure. He comes with a fantastic likeness that favors the actor who played him very well. But the figure comes with one of the worst centers of gravity we have ever seen in a Star Wars action figure. He won’t stand for anything. Also, what is up with his pointy finger on his left hand and the angled right arm. Something is very off with the aesthetics of his personality. Uncle Owen Lars never looked this happy, so the action figure portrays a surly individual very inaccurately. Uncle Owen Lars comes with a removable robe shell, but he looks silly without it. Other than that the figure is a very straightforward release. The paint operations on the figure are especially nice as well. Kenner/Hasbro did a wonderful job at decorating the figure. But the wonky pose and the terrible balance will make collectors wish for another release almost immediately. The other two figures in this set are redundant, but Kenner/Hasbro at least made them look unique to their original releases. But will it be enough for you to care?
C-3PO is based on the original 1995 POTF2 [R] C-3PO figure, but comes with quite a few new enhancements that you’ll likely consider it an all-new figure. C-3PO comes with a filthy paint job. You’ll find all of the grit and grime you want to on his shiny metal finish. And you’ll also see him leaking oil from his gears due to the hot Tatooine suns frying his circuits. C-3PO comes with only six points of articulation, but you probably don’t need much more than this to stand him up in a line while he’s for sale from the Jawas. Luke Skywalker is perhaps the biggest disappointment in this set. It’s not a terrible figure. Kenner/Hasbro significantly reduced the bulkiness of the character with this release. He looks much thinner and leaner. They tooled a pair of macrobionculars on his belt, and he’s posed in a walking motion which is unique for this character. But like the other figures, Luke Skywalker comes without any weapons and a floppy hat, or something to keep things interesting. The Purchase Of The Droids Cinema Scenes set looks great in the window box packaging. It looks so good that you may want to keep them there.
