The initial waves of the STAR TOURS line, via the Power Of The Jedi line, showed collectors right from the start that they should expect to see droid designs as we’ve never seen previously. Hasbro, in conjunction with Disney, created a line of characters that served as mementos of the Disney theme parks for those that attend them, and also served as developing the Expanded Universe for those that didn’t. Either way, getting new and exciting droids for the 3.75” toy line is always a wonderful thing, and Hasbro delivered five new characters, and one repaint of the same character, for the STAR TOURS line. DL-X2n is one of the more bizarre characters, and in all honesty, its design looks like something you’d see in a 1980s science fiction movie. It’s fitting since the STAR TOURS attraction opened in the late eighties. DL-X2 was a Veril Line Systems DL-series security droid that worked for the STAR TOURS travel agency. It was stationed in Sector 2 of the spaceport.

The STAR TOURS line was long-rumored to only include repaints and repacks of currently existing protocol and astromech droid sculpts. But Hasbro surprised us all when they released the first wave of Collection 1 STAR TOURS figures. Not one shared tooling of any figures in Hasbro’s parts catalog. And instead, we received three droid models we never saw in the line before, and DL-X2 is one of them. DL-X2 is the simplest design of the first wave. With a design shape that isn’t much more than a trapezoidal prism, DL-X2 is as simple in articulation as it is in design. The action figure only comes with one articulation point: a hinge-jointed arm. And aside from placing its arm at different levels, the figure has no other articulation at all. Disappointingly, there is a “false” door on the front of DL-X2, and although you’d swear it can open, that is not a true assertion by any mean. DL-X2 has no “face” or no “legs” or no “body segments.” It’s a droid that feels out of time with its contemporaries.

Not much more than a prop for the STAR TOURS attraction, it appears that Hasbro didn’t get the scale correct on this figure either. It feels like the DL-X2 should be smaller than it is. The deco on DL-X2 is done very nicely. Hasbro doesn’t often struggle with decorating their figures beautifully, and DL-X2 is no exception. Interestingly, DL-X2 has lettering on it that is not Aurebesh. Hasbro kept this writing faithful to the theme park attraction. But it would have been nice to see the letters translated into Aurebesh for the figure. It reads “Sector 2 Security” which defines the character’s placement in the STAR TOURS attraction. And it is colored brightly and stands out as one of the nicest details on the figure. Coincidentally, not much else is know about the DL-X2, and we may never know the backstory of this peculiar character. We do know, however, that the figure will round out your current STAR TOURS collection beautifully. And we hope more like it are on the way.
