Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the most prominent Jedi Knights of the Old Republic and also one of the last survivors of the Clone Wars. Taught by Yoda, the centuries old Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi learned many of the Jedi Force skills, including control over mind and body, the power to alter Force lines in nature and life, and extra senses. He also became an expert with using the lightsaber, the elegant weapon of the Jedi Knight, but also the weapon that would one day be used to destroy him.

During the Clone Wars, Kenobi met the young hot-shot pilot who would be come his first Jedi pupil, Anakin Skywalker. In Skywalker, Obi-Wan saw great potential, but in his efforts to train the young man, the Jedi Knight failed to see that his student was delving into the dark side. When Kenobi finally realized this, it was too late. Anakin Skywalker had been seduced by the evil ways of the Imperial Emperor Palpatine. Obi-Wan tried to save his student, but this resulted in a vicious lightsaber battle where Anakin fell into a molten pit. In that dark moment, Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, forever and enemy to Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Rebel Alliance.

Vader became one of Emperor Palpatine’s top advisors, and Obi-Wan feared for his safety. He changed his name to Ben Kenobi and went into hiding on the planet Tatooine, living in the barren and treacherous Jundland Wastes and keeping watch over Anakin Skywalker’s son, Luke. Unbeknownst to Lord Vader, his wife had bore two children whom Obi-Wan had separated and hidden away.

Kenobi and Luke would meet again when R2-D2 delivered the princess’ message asking that Obi-Wan come to Alderaan to aid the Alliance. He presented to Luke his father’s lightsaber and asked that he begin to learn the ways of the Force. During the trip to Alderaan, Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon was trapped by the Death Star tractor beam and pulled inside.

It was here that teacher and pupil would meet again. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader engaged in a savage lightsaber battle where the Jedi Knight deactivated his sword and allowed Lord Vader to strike him down. Kenobi had sacrificed his life to protect Luke, Leia and the plight of the Alliance. The noble Jedi Knight disappeared as he became one with the Force.

Authentically styled straight from Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader are armed with their signature lightsabers. These special edition 12” figures, available for the first time ever, are destined to become classic collectibles.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

How do you make two “bad” Collector Series figures worse? You add in electronics and new parts that make them less-articulated than before, that’s how. The JC Penney Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Vader (Electronic Power F/X) looks great in a box, but once out of it you’ll realize how poorly designed these figures indeed are, despite Kenner/Hasbro’s intentions desire to make something more “collectible” for collectors of the line. The Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Vader (Electronic Power F/X) is displayed in a beautiful window box with the backdrop of the halls of the Death Star. Featured are Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. The updated figures come with new torsos and new right arms with electronics. The lightsaber blades are removable, but there is now a light inside of the lightsaber hilt that illuminates the blades. Sadly, the new arms come with limited articulation. And you can’t bend the arms any which way you want because they ensured the wiring inside of them are protected with only one range of limited movement. The chests of both figures have dialogue boxes inside of them. And with the press of a button, each character says various lines from the film. As you know, this Darth Vader is based on The Empire Strikes Back, and not A New Hope. So this version of the outfit is not screen-accurate. Also, Darth Vader‘s helmet barely comes up to the top of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s head. Darth Vader is laughably short and doesn’t fit the scale of the Collectors Series line at all. Limited as an exclusive release at JC Penney, most collectors acquired this item through their infamous mail-order catalog for a whopping $99.99. Imagine buying one to open and one to keep packaged. That’s where we got our sample for review.
