Clone Captain Rex served the Republic during the Clone Wars. He viewed military service as an honor, and he always completed his mission.

Clone Captain Rex is back in the animated world of The Bad Batch, and not that much has changed from the character’s tenure in the beloved The Clone Wars series. The fact that Clone Captain Rex didn’t vary all that much benefitted Hasbro greatly, as they dusted off existing tooling to produce The Black Series [Phase IV] Clone Captain Rex (TBB06) Walmart exclusive figure. They added a different wash to recreate the dirt on the armor, changed the pauldron, and then repainted the figure from head to toe. Lastly, they added a brand new soft-goods multilayered poncho that fits like a glove on the figure’s body. Coincidentally, Hasbro used moleskin-like fabric to design the poncho. It has a smooth, silky texture completed with a “print” on it to help recreate the look and feel of the animated character. The fact that a Clone Captain Rex is once again exclusive to Walmart is egregious at best. This main character in the Star Wars saga deserves wide-range availability. The figure sold out in milliseconds online, and many collectors are without, unfortunately. We’re not sure if Hasbro will ever truly get a taste of the discontent that collectors have for the brand lately. Collecting is becoming unenjoyable at this point, simply because we can’t seem to secure the new items they show us.

While past versions of Clone Captain Rex were suitable for their time, re-releasing the exact figure in 2021 feels like we’re taking steps backward in this current phase of The Black Series 6-inch line. Despite this, Clone Captain Rex has turned out remarkably well. The extra accessories here do a great deal to help bring this figure to the next level. Admittedly, the new poncho hides many of the figure’s original sins. That’s a good thing. The new paint operations have also helped this tooling out incredibly as well. The attention to detail, including the realistic interpretation of the face sculpt, and the intelligent reuse of existing parts, does this figure a world of good if you can get past the old clone “buck” at this stage. That said, all of the pieces work together magnificently here and make an incredibly “screen accurate” version of this favorite clone captain, now part of The Bad Batch Disney+ series. Once again, It feels like Hasbro held back on the figure as they didn’t include all of the character’s significant weapons. They omitted the DC-15 blaster and DC-15 blaster rifle, which feels painful. It’s not like we don’t have these weapons already to give this figure, but why not include them in the regular release and the exclusive version?

These are standard weapons that Clone Captain Rex used throughout the entire The Clone Wars series, so we’re disappointed that they couldn’t waste a few extra cents and include them here too. Other than that, we’re pretty happy with what Hasbro included in this release. In our opinion, a figure like Clone Captain Rex needs to be a consistent thing in The Black Series 6” line. These should not be one-off characters released here and there and certainly not exclusive. So many Star Wars collectors adore The Clone Wars and now The Bad Batch, and getting beautiful realistically interpreted versions of them in this scale is a satisfying thing. Originally based on 2014’s TBS [P1] Clone Trooper (#14) figure, Clone Captain Rex comes with an impressive 30 points of articulation across 19 points of articulation. But as you know well by now, this figure’s articulation system is outdated at this point. The two DC-17 blaster pistols fit perfectly in their holsters when not in us. And the belt also fits tightly around the figure’s waist. Clone Captain Rex looks so good from a strictly visual perspective that it looks like a scaled-down Captain Rex [CC-7567] (501st Legion: Torrent Company) 1:6 Scale Figure from Sideshow Collectibles. Whatever you feel, Hasbro needs to get more of this new version of Clone Captain Rex out to the public. This action figure is now sold out.
