We’re not sure about your feelings, but the Gaming Greats sub-line has become a blessing and a curse for The Vintage Collection line. Hasbro has added multiple surprises into the line thus far, and Lando Calrissian (Star Wars: Battlefront II) is a prime example of this. Although this particular outfit made a brief appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Hasbro decided that they’d develop the Gaming Greats sub-line instead, which likely works for most collectors. The colorful Hawaiian-esque shirt with a new scarf and pants makes for a bright new outfit of this overall beloved Star Wars character. Lando Calrissian (Star Wars: Battlefront II) comes with one new part, a soft-good cape with a teal blue lining. And the new apparel fits like a glove on the figure. They’ve sized it perfectly to complement the figure instead of getting lost. The paint operations are generally excellent on this new interpretation of Lando, but Hasbro appears to cut some pennies off of the paint operations because the pattern isn't even and full throughout the entire shirt. You may be alright with this laziness, but all Hasbro had to do here was add a new cape. They saved on the rest of the figure’s existing tooling. Couldn’t they have spared a few more pennies to ensure the critical pattern was complete on the shirt? What’s worse is that the back of the figure only has the pattern in white. They didn’t bother to fully recreate the pattern for the reverse side of the action figure. That’s inexcusable.
The Vintage Collection hasn’t been kind to characters from Solo: A Star Wars Story. We’ve received so few characters from this film, so it’s nice to get a new one, even if that means it’s a repaint or sourced to another arena of the Star Wars saga. Aside from the obligatory Han Solo figure and a couple of troopers (one exclusive and one not exclusive), Hasbro created very few characters for super-articulated fans. But here is another. Lando Calrissian is consistently on Hasbro’s wish list, making collectors primarily happy. The original version of Lando Calrissian is easily one of the finest in The Vintage Collection. It makes sense why Hasbro would want to revisit this action figure in some capacity. The head sculpt and its Photo Real paint job still looks incredible. This action figure looks like actor Donald Glover so much that it’s eerie. We had commented that Hasbro was working through a “learning curve” with Photo Real technology in the 3.75-inch scaled line. From the skin color to the eyes to the incomparable hairstyle, Lando Calrissian is a triumph for all to enjoy another time. The shirt is still bright yellow, and the detailing captures the drape and fits wonderfully. The scarf is more colorful this round, and the red and white detail pop. But we have to concede that the bright white pants are the most visible feature of this action figure. And Lando Calrissian wears white fabric well. You’re going to get a robust '80s vibe from this action figure.
The only weapon that Lando Calrissian comes with is the silver blaster. It fits nicely in the holster added to the right leg. Hasbro also tooled hands that hold the blaster well, no matter the pose in which you place the figure. Lando Calrissian comes with a beautiful articulation system. The system isn’t anything out of the ordinary that Hasbro’s already given us, but it’s nice to know they’re consistent in creating quality action figures that articulate as perfectly as this figure. But with some patience and time, you can recreate poses with the figure running or at attention. You have many options with this action figure. Hasbro tooled it excellently in 2017 and still holds up well a half-decade later. Our only complaint is there aren’t enough other super-articulated action figures from Solo: A Star Wars Story available to collectors. We hope Hasbro has planned more Solo: A Star Wars Story figures for The Vintage Collection. They design these figures incredibly well, and we need more to help flesh out our displays. One detail we’re happy to see implemented here is the use of a subtitle. Only the first appearance of the character should not have subtitles. But every other iteration needs a subtitle. For example, “Lando Calrissian” is the character from The Empire Strikes Back, not Solo or Star Wars: Battlefront II. Aside from the outrageous pricing of the Fan Channel exclusive Gaming Greats line, we’re happy to see this figure as a part of the 3.75-inch super-articulated lineup.
