Hasbro is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Return Of The Jedi with many repacks. To no surprise, they dusted off the tooling of their old Jabba The Hutt 6-inch figure and paired it with an updated version of their Kowalkian monkey-lizard tooling. Then, they added new packaging based on the classic Kenner Star Wars line look and set the MSRP at a premium. The set is almost &100 after tax, one of the most egregious things we’ve encountered this year in the Hasbro Star Wars line. It’s not like the Jabba The Hutt & Salacious B. Crumb set doesn’t look nice because it does. However, the repetition in this line, coupled with prices that no one can afford, makes the hobby unenjoyable. We don’t know how much longer Hasbro can sustain the Hasbro Star Wars brand, with things progressively getting worse. But we’re sure that there are plenty of suckers out there still dropping loads of cash before paying rent and making car payments, so until that behavior ceases, Hasbro continues to have a solid bottom line. The Jabba The Hutt & Salacious B. Crumb Shop Disney exclusive isn’t without merit. But can you afford it for your collection?

Hasbro decided that the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con exclusive would be Jabba The Hutt’s Throne Room, a fancier take on the 2014 TBS [P2] Jabba The Hutt Deluxe 6-inch figure that made its way to the general marketplace at about the same time. For this release, Jabba received a special gift-box-styled packaging where the style mimics the Kenner line but on a larger scale. The Jabba The Hutt is securely in place with plenty of strings and plastic-free inserts, but we don’t get anything new that we have not seen. Salacious B. Crumb is relatively new, but the tooling was released in a Disney Parks set a couple of years before this one. If you decide to keep this unaltered and unopened, it’s quite a beautiful display piece. But it’s all about the toys inside, so we won’t hold off opening this up. This interpretation of Jabba The Hutt is remarkable. It still holds up well after all of the ese years. Hasbro perfectly recreated the paint job, and the paint applications helped to bring out an incredibly accurate sculpt. Jabba comes with a silly action feature. When you rotate either of Jabba’s arms in either direction vertically, it will open and close the lower jaw. Hasbro utilized soft, rubbery plastic to develop the mouth movement feature, and it looks realistic.

Hasbro also gave Jabba The Hutt premium articulation in the arms. Although they designed them to accommodate the action feature, they worked in ball-jointed shoulders, elbows, and wrists. Aside from the opening mouth, Jabba The Hutt also comes with a swivel torso, which interrupts the character’s aesthetics but simultaneously gives it needed articulation. Hasbro made Jabba The Hutt with collectors in mind. And if somewhere down the road, Hasbro could tool an appropriately scaled plastic dais, and all would be right in the world. The accessories still look cheap. The pipe, the bowl, and the railing look like inferior items. Hasbro produced them in a plastic that looks like bootleg-level creations. Hasbro made the railing into two separate parts. The hookah piper/bowl combination pieces are a little bit better. And to be fair, Hasbro has added a lot of detail to these parts. As you can see, Jabba The Hutt & Salacious B. Crumb isn’t without faults, but it’s gorgeous from many other perspectives. The price is too high for our liking, but it’s exclusive, and they always command a higher dollar value. And if you don’t open collectibles like this, you’ll still make out, thanks to the stunning packaging.
