July 22, 2009 — Freebies & Giveaways
Back to Main SDCC Coverage Page

San Diego Comic-Con is full of exclusives and goodies to hunt down and buy. But, one of the fun things to do is go around and enjoy some of the best collectibles to be had: the free ones! There was no short supply of Star Wars freebies this year! We've got a gallery of just a sampling of what could be had if you were in the right place at the right time!

There were more freebies given away than I was able to score, so if you picked up something not in my gallery or not listed here, drop me an email with a picture and where you got it from and I'll add it to the gallery!

DK Publishing Booth
DK Publishing was heavily promoting the new LEGO Visual Dictionary. And, one of the coolest giveaways of this years SDCC was a niftly little postcard set. Featuring 8 full color glossy postcards with all of our favorite little LEGO mini figures. They also handed out a single postcard showcasing the exclusive mini figure included with the book, as well as a nice refridgerator magnet.

Hallmark Booth
Hallmark had some pretty sweet exclusive ornaments at this years show, but they also had 5 buttons to give away. A new button was given away each day featuring Greedo, Han Solo (Stormtrooper Disguise), Luke & his landspeeder, Anakin & Ahsoka, and the famous Episode I duel (not pictured). Also, handed out when you bought the exclusive clone trooper ornament set was a nice glossy picture set of the ornaments themselves.

Del Ray Booth
Del Ray was heavily promoting both Death Troopers and the new Fate of the Jedi books. Along with a very cool linticular bookmark was an oversized glossy slick featuring the books cover. On Friday and Saturday the authors of the Fate of the Jedi series (Aaron Allston, Christie Golden, and Troy Denning) were on hand to sign books. At the same time, Del Ray handed out a very nice 18"x36" double-sided poster. One side sported the covers of the first three books in the series, and the other the Death Troopers art. And, they each signed the poster (and even in the proper color ink to go with their art!) If you didn't have any books to sign, Del Ray was happy to provide you with several different paperbacks from the Legacy of the Force series to get signed, free of charge! A picture of the booksigning can be seen here.

Lucasfilm Pavilion
The Lucasfilm Pavilion was always always a hopping place! There were many organized photoshoots here several times each day, including the popular slave Leia group photo. And, there was no lack of freebies here! At any given time you could almost always find something being handed out. There were Mighty Mugg buttons given away daily featuring custom Muggs from The Empire Muggs Back, including the Emperor, Slave Leia, Greedo, Wamps (not pictured), Deathstar (not pictured), and Darth Vader Toast (not pictured). Other items include a Clone Wars tatoo set, hand fan, and an Empire Muggs Back photo slick (front and back pictured). Two of the cooler items handed out were an Old Republic mini comic book and his and her Mando t-shirts.

The Old Republic: Threat of Peace was handed out fairly regularly, but once a day you could catch a few of the creators of the comic, including writer Rob Chestney and artist Alex Sanchez on hand to sign copies.

One of the biggest draws to the pavilion was during the broadcast of the trailer for The Old Republic. Four times a day they would play the trailer, always to huge applause, then directly after hand out t-shirts. They didn't hand out many, so you were lucky to score one! And, they randomly handed out his or hers shirts! These unique shirts sport a cool Mando-style body armor front, with the game logo on the back (front and backs of both styles are pictured below).

Dark Horse Booth
Dark Horse went green this year! Well, not the color, but the eco-friendly green. Bag collecting is almost as popular as button collecting at SDCC. This year Dark Horse decided to ditch the landfill unfriendly plastic bags of years past and go with four different styles of reusable cloth bags. Each style sported one of their brands, so naturally one of the bags featured our beloved Star Wars!

Official Pix Booth
Official Pix handed out a nice glossy trading card (front and back pictured).

eFX Collectibles
Showing their growth from last year, the eFX Collectibles booth was slightly bigger this year, and if you walked by at the right time you were handed a very cool 13"x19" mini-poster featuring a nice collage of collectibles from eFX. Along with the poster you could also pick up a glossy slick advertising their new Mcquarrie Darth Vader helmet.

Hasbro Booth
Hasbro gave away their traditional action figure poster, double-sided (both sides pictured below), with the upcoming Legacy Collection on one side, and the new line of The Clone Wars figures on the other. In a similar fashion they also handed out The Official Hasbro Handbook, a double-sided toy booklet (both covers pictured below). This book has pictures of most of the upcoming Star Wars toys.

LEGO Booth
The LEGO booth was also a very hopping place, with the raffles for the hot LEGO exclusives happening twice daily! But, if you were lucky, someone randomly came around and handed you a cool little freebie promoting the Holo-Brick Archives.

There were various other freebies throughout the con, and I'm sure there are tons that I missed! If you have any not listed here, feel free to send me pictures or tell me what they are so I can continue to compile a list here! And remember, if you are a Star Wars fan in a hunt for free stuff at SDCC, then the Force will definately be with you!
