If you were actively collecting during the fabulous The Original Trilogy Collection in 2004, you’re aware that Hasbro introduced the first “Vintage Kenner” carded figures, much to the excitement and amazement of the entire Star Wars collecting community. The Hasbro team back then realized the importance of the 1978 Star Wars toy line and the main characters that should be part of it. When choosing four characters for placement on the replica 1978 STAR WARS cards, Hasbro wisely chose Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi. These four main heroes are synonymous with the Star Wars branding. The modern counterparts started a fire in collectors to see every original Kenner figure updated in vintage Kenner packaging. So why are these four characters still conspicuously absent from The Vintage Collection after eight active years? (more….)
Welcome to another entry in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column. Hasbro recently committed collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that there needs a modern counterpart for every classic Kenner figure. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done, and we’ll figure out where we are step by step.
We’re right in alignment with Hasbro in our vintage Kenner database. There are 21 figures under the STAR WARS banner, 29 figures under THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK banner, 31 figures under the RETURN OF THE JEDI banner, and 15 figures under THE POWER OF THE FORCE banner. (Sy Snootles, Max Rebo, Droopy McCool, and Blue Snaggletooth bring the number to an even 100 figures.)
Read our assessment, and then be sure to add your thoughts to the comments. Let us know if you agree or disagree. If you’re a customizer, show us your custom definitive figure in the comments as well! Who knows? It might give Hasbro some ideas.
Tonight we are adding the awesome original Kenner deco The Black Series Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi to the Visual Guides. Click below for the full Visual Guide page. You can also check out our full review of this figure right here.
Hasbro just produced a small group of 6″ figures based on the deco of their vintage Kenner counterparts. The Black Series 6″ collectors didn’t ask for them (they probably don’t want them). But The Vintage Collection collectors have asked for action figures like this since 1995. Hasbro said they would NEVER do this. Fibbers. That said, Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi is one of the best 6″ figures ever produced. We hope the 6″ collecting community appreciates a gift like this! (more….)
You saw our The Pathway To The Vintage Collection Special Report published on August 6th. Now let’s revisit the figures that set The Vintage Collection in motion. Let’s continue moving ahead with 2004’s VOTC Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi figure in our newly updated review, complete with new text and photos and Visual Guide.
If you rewind your mind 16 years, the first wave of The Original Trilogy Collection “vintage-styled” action figures began showing up and brick and mortar right around this time. It blows my mind that sixteen years later, we STILL don’t have any of the first four figures from the line launch updated in The Vintage Collection yet. Hopefully, with Hasbro’s new directive of completing the “Kenner 96,” these four figures including Luke Skywalker Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi should be the focus of Hasbro’s concentration. Could you imagine if they revealed all four of these on a Fan First Friday? The 3.75″ super-articulated collecting community might go a full year without complaining. Hasbro, these are LONG overdue. Please get them updated!
In 1984, new packaging for Star Wars figures was introduced for the European market. A cost containment initiative, the new packaging sported three languages of the Return Of The Jedi logo for a “one size fits all” approach. Although a “three-logo” design was created for The Power Of The Force line (as evidenced on some ‘boxed’ toys), it wasn’t carried over to the basic figure line’s card design. They continued to use the three Return Of The Jedi logos instead. Although the word “Trilogo” is found nowhere on the packaging, the term is universally adopted by all Star Wars collectors to describe this line of figures.
Today we revisit Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi. Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi’s Trilogo card art features an alternate “portrait style” image of the character with a background of the Millennium Falcon inside of the Death Star. The artists at Kenner “airbrushed” the bottom third of the character and added a lit lightsaber that didn’t exist in the original publicity shot. Most of the background is “fake” and also part of the “airbrushing” technique of the early eighties. It was also used for the running change American Kenner Return Of The Jedi figure. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1978’s STAR WARS Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi figure HERE.
The JC Penney exclusive Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Vader (Electronic Power F/X) Collector Series set looks great packaged. But the figures are a setback from the originals if you can believe it. Hasbro came a long way with the late-2003 Star Wars “Saga” [Phase III] Obi-Wan Kenobi (Tatooine Encounter) 12 Inch Figure. It has a lot going for it, but it’s still not perfect. We have just completed our intense look at the first series of vintage Kenner Star Wars figures: the 12-Backs. Because May is typically a Star Wars month and 2018 is the 40th anniversary that vintage Kenner Star Wars figures arrived at retail, we felt it was the perfect time to start vintage Kenner reviews. (Oh, and let us not forget The Vintage Collection’s return is another huge motivator of this run too.) Each new month, we will focus on a new series of figures where we’ll finish the complete vintage Kenner run in December with the 1985 The Power Of The Force line. Already, they are receiving wonderful feedback and tons of you are checking them out. But we want more of your stories, so please leave them in our comments. Thanks for your participation thus far, and we hope more of you leave your vintage Kenner experiences with us in the comments going forward! Thank you for making this a success for us. We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into them and we were hoping that they’d go over well with our readers. They seem to have. And for that we’re grateful.
