Welcome to another entry in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column. Hasbro recently committed collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that there needs a modern counterpart for every classic Kenner figure. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done, and we’ll figure out where we are step by step.

We’re right in alignment with Hasbro in our vintage Kenner database. There are 21 figures under the STAR WARS banner, 29 figures under THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK banner, 31 figures under the RETURN OF THE JEDI banner, and 15 figures under THE POWER OF THE FORCE banner. (Sy Snootles, Max Rebo, Droopy McCool, and Blue Snaggletooth bring the number to an even 100 figures.)

Hasbro has revealed their next The Black Series figures offered up on classic card backs. This time, we get 4 figures from The Clone Wars (Clone Pilot Hawk, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and ARC Trooper Echo), packaged on the original The Clone Wars card backs. Here are some quick pics of the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary line of Kenner-inspired The Black Series 6″ figures, something Hasbro said they would never do for 3.75″ collectors despite constant begging, but have done it for 6″ collectors. JTA reader and friend Scot G. found the latest The Vintage Collection repacks wave including Wicket, Obi-Wan Kenobi (TCW), Anakin Skywalker (TCW), and Darth Maul at his kocal TARGET in Texas. The Vintage Collection Obi-Wan Kenobi (VC103) went sky-high on the aftermarket, so it makes sense we’re seeing the figure again eight years later. Hasbro re-released the figure with improved paint operations and Photo Real. For The Vintage Collection “2.0” lineup, Obi-Wan Kenobi received a significant amount of updating. They even changed the pitch of the character’s head on the card art. In our opinion, the Photo Real deco is stunning, if you can find the right sample that is. The colors are quite different on the re-release. We took the time to break it all down for you by producing an all-new 76-image gallery complete with both versions (2012 and 2020) featured, comparison shots, diorama shots, and a breakdown of what separates the two releases in the Collector Notes. Check out this excellently updated figure in our RDRs now! There’s more difference here than you may realize.

ICYMI, The Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi from The Vintage Collection line is also available for pre-order at Amazon. This was one of the hottest figures in the original TVC lineup in 2012/2013. The image below DOES NOT reflect Photo Real update.

More details for the upcoming Disney+ Kenobi series have been announced! Deborah Chow will direct the series and Hossein Amini will write the scripts. Executive producers will be Chow, Amini and Ewan McGregor, alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (she worked on The Queen, Philomena, Florence Foster Jenkins) and John Swartz (producer for Force Awakens, Rogue One and Solo).
Deborah Chow has directed episodes for quite a few illustrous tv/streaming shows, she worked on the Mandalorian, Better Call Saul, Fear The Walking Dead, American Gods, The Man in the High Castle, Mr. Robot and Vampire Diaries, to name a few. Hossein Amini is best known for writing the Ryan Gosling movie “Drive”, he also worked on “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “47 Ronin”.  See the full story at the Hollywood Reporter.

And while I will not review the figure, I will tell you a few things most likely not covered by Paul’s review. Including a comparison with other figures! Since we all love rumors so much, here’s a report from website Cinelinx, which got the same info from two independent sources: apparently Ewan McGregor has signed a contract for an Obi-Wan series on Disney+. And yes, this is yet unverified, but this particular rumor, that Disney will produce an Obi-Wan series, has been circulating for a long time now, apparently production was set up already a while ago. This new story is widely reported by various news outlets tonight, but Cinelinx is the original source here, everyone else just quotes them.
If there will be an Obi-Wan series then we may expect Disney to announce something at D23. It is absolutely certain that there will be more live action Star Wars shows on Disney+, Obi-Wan would be a logical choice, since fans have been wanting to see Ewan McGregor to return as the Jedi master for a long time now. We’ll keep you posted! And with the Mandalorian and Cassian Andor it would be a good choice to have a show which features at least one Force user and lightsabers.
