Welcome to another entry in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column. Hasbro recently committed to collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that there needs a modern counterpart for every classic Kenner figure. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done, and we’ll figure out where we are step by step. Today we assess Imperial TIE Fighter Pilot.
Well, here is something a little shocking. Did you know that The Vintage Collection TIE Fighter Pilot (VC65) REISSUE is really a new character in the lineup, and shouldn’t be counted as a reissue of the original VC65 figure from 2011? For unknown reasons, Hasbro repacked Lieutenant Oxixo as the 2021 TVC TIE Fighter Pilot reissue instead of the figure with the solid black helmet. Will there be a running change? Because this is incorrect. Lieutenant Oxixo needs a new VC number and new card art – it’s a new character for the line. If Rebel Fleet Trooper gets both a VC52 and a VC183 number and it’s the same figure, then a generic TIE Fighter Pilot and Lieutenant Oxixio need two unique numbers between them! The figure received a couple of other enhancements aside from the obvious. The Photo Real on this figure is not bad. But there are other things. We took the time to break it all down for you by producing an all-new 76-image gallery complete with both versions (2011 and 2021) featured, comparison shots, and a breakdown of what separates the two releases in the Collector Notes. Check out this confusing re-release in our RDRs now! There’s more difference here than you may realize.
The worst wave of The Vintage Collection repacks of all time is now hitting your local Walmart store. JTA reader and friend Russ T. found the wave at his local Walmart in NJ. Let us know of your store finds too in the comments!

Cancel those full-priced pre-orders! Walmart has marked down the pre-order price to The Vintage Collection’s Anakin Skywalker (Peasant Disguise), Queen Amidala, and TIE Fighter Pilot down to $11.04 each. The Battle Droid remains at normal MSRP. Save nearly $2 per figure by ordering at Walmart now! Special thanks to JTA reader and friend Mark for the alert!
5POA is never OK, but at least Hasbro did something good with the Celebrate The Saga multipacks, a parting gift for collectors as they close the tooling archives on these figures forever. The Galactic Empire set includes a new take on R2-Q5, a figure we haven’t seen Hasbro release is 19 years. And the included TIE Fighter Pilot and Snowtrooper sculpts are better than their current super-articulated counterparts. The rest of the set is “meh.” Are you buying these sets for your collection? (more….)

Hasbro, it’s time to execute Order Darth Revan (VC150) on the latest repacks for The Vintage Collection. The Battle Droid isn’t a terrible inclusion, but two of the others included made up the Great TPM 3D Debacle of 2012. Another was part of a wave that bottlenecked distribution in early 2011 (Anakin Skywalker), and lastly, a figure that’s needed an all-new sculpt since 2008 (the TIE Fighter Pilot) is perhaps the worst of the foursome. This wave is a no-win situation. Please do better. Here are some ideas: General Grievous. Rebel Trooper (Echo Base). Shae Vizla. Clone Trooper (501st Legion- the rarest TVC figures from the original run). Kit Fisto. Jango Fett. Grand Moff Tarkin. Luke Skywalker (Dagobah Landing). ARC Trooper Commander. Starkiller. Weequay. Emperor’s Royal Guard. There are SO MANY OTHERS that should have come before these four.
Hasbro made TWO HUGE mistakes deciding on what figures to release in The Vintage Collection basic figure line. It might be two of their worst decisions in the ENTIRE run of The Vintage Collection basic figure line. (more….)

Check out our 112-image gallery of the STUNNING TARGET exclusive Stormtrooper (Squad Leader)/Mudtrooper/Imperial Patrol Trooper/Han Solo (Mimban)/Stormtrooper (Mimban)/TIE Fighter Pilot 6-pack which Hasbro based on Solo: A Star Wars Story. A set like this should serve as a template to how 5POA should be approached. The only thing disappointing is that all of these beautiful figures aren’t super-articulated, although some of you may not care about this detail. Hasbro loaded the set with newness and smart repacks. The set officially goes on sale today, so make sure you check out our thoughts before buying yours. Retailer Robot Kingdom has updated their site product page for the Inferno Squadron TIE Pilot which shows a new January 1, 2018 release date (instead of the November 2017 date shown on GamesStop’s product page. (Anything can change of course.) It’s more than likely that this just means “sometime in first quarter 2018” and there is something much bigger coming then anyhow.
