At 8 PM all people would gather before the doors of the Grand Rex theatre, a beautiful classic theatre that would give the entire convention some extra glamour. That first evening the audience was treated to a special concert of Star Wars music, brought by a genuine symphonic orchestra. If you think that the pictures look cool, you just should have heard them play! Having a great score underline dramatic moments in a movie is one thing; John Williams' music played live however goes far beyond that! This is Art with a big "A"! It was made even more special because the orchestra Director was a 22-year wonder talent, Samuel Sene. David met up with Samuel after the concert and had an interesting chat with him. He turned out to be a very nice and warm person and not surprisingly, he had a great love for Star Wars.
The concert already kindled all the enthusiasm that would be needed for this convention, but the attending fans were treated to another special before the convention doors would close that day: a compilation of 7 minutes of "Revenge of the Sith", projected in the only quality that does it real credit: digital.
After that, there was a Q&A session with nobody less than George's right hand Rick McCallum.
Rick had originally planned to attend the two first days of the convention, but eventually he would be around only for the first day. As a matter of fact, he had to join up with George Lucas the next day to attend the opening of the film festival in Cannes instead. David was sitting right behind Rick and didn't only manage to get his picture taken with him, but also succeeded in talking to him about his fan films. Rick promised to take a look at Davids fan film if he left a copy with Steve Sansweet, who would be attending the event as well. Of course, David happily complied. Now, Rick is an awfully busy person so let's hope he remembers to watch George Lucas: Legends of the Force.
The next day they were back in the Grand Rex at the dawn of light, anxious to find out what the organizers had prepared for them next. As you can see from the pictures, this day would be partially dedicated to merchandise. David and friends marvelled for the better part of an hour at the detail and work that goes into making Attakus statues. I'm sure you'll enjoy the pictures of the ones that were displayed and the prototypes that were on showcase as well.
